“Land here!” “You need to turn. Turn now! Cut the Engines!” “Doctor! She’s pregnant!” Spotlights tunnel in the dark against the Aegean Sea. Voices explode through megaphones. Waves slam against the rocky shore of the Greek island of Lesvos. These people who are calling home? They are the fortunate ones.

Escape from a Past Life, Greece

“Land here!” “You need to turn. Turn now! Cut the Engines!” “Doctor! She’s pregnant!” Spotlights beaming in the dark against the Aegean Sea. Voices vibrating through megaphones. Waves crashing against the rocky shore. The crying echoes of men, women and children. Volunteers racing forward. Possessions ripped out of plastic wrapping. Phone calls telling loved ones they’ve made it. These are not scenes from a film, but each one a recurring sound of the Greek Island of Lesvos.

Benjamin

This is a model for a one-ton sculpture that would detect oil spills on a global scale using a spider-crawling algorithm.  “Benjamin” would respond to oil spills in real time by turning and pinging the location of each disaster on a map.  The sculpture would also serve as a site for the public to engage in dialogue with an expert of panelists about environmental issues.

When not in use the sculpture acts as a place of dialogue for environmental issues by hosting panels for and by the public.

A 2,000 lb sculpture made of concrete
and epoxy exposing the atrocity of war on the human body. The sculpture created in the form of a table opens up the ability to have dialogue without turning away from the subject at hand as it is physically in front of you, lessening the abstractions of violence.

An Unnatural Union, Greece

Each object contains the memories of people who’ve fled their homes in search of safety.  The objects are as much about what was carried as what was left behind.
An Unnatural Union, Greece

While these belongings, at first glance, may look to the viewer like junk, each object contains the memories of people who've fled their homes in search of new lives.

With this series of images, I hope to invite the viewer to re-consider your connection to your own possessions. What would you take if you had to leave your home forever? What could you live without?
